Figures from the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages show the classics still hold appeal for many modern parents.
But brand names, actors, authors and sport stars proved the inspiration for others. Chanel, Mercedes and Armani were among the unique names registered last year.
Hot on their heels were Mia, the name of tennis star Lleyton Hewitt and actress wife Bec’s daughter, and Emily and Isabella.
Sienna has continued to gain popularity for girls, along with the rising profile of British actress Sienna Miller.
Jack, Thomas and William were the most common monikers for boys in 2007, followed by Joshua and Lachlan. For girls, Olivia and Ella reigned supreme.
Lucas, Cooper and Charlie entered the top 20 for boys. But Nicholas, Luke and Max fell out of favour. Matilda also made it into the top 20 for girls, while Georgia dropped out.
